LPG (autogas) is normally sold at about half the price of both petrol and diesel, allowing motorists to save around 40% when filling up. The reason why LPG is currently much cheaper compared to petrol is because the Government has fixed the tax far lower in recognition of LPG’s environmental benefits.
In addition to this, there are also other savings made due to reduced engine wear, and a small reduction in Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) for cars registered after 2001. Thus, even though a car’s mileage on a full tank of autogas is less than that of one using petrol, the savings will still be enormous.
Once your vehicle undergoes LPG conversion, on average a litre of LPG fuel will take you the same distance as 800ml of petrol.
Diesel engines can also be converted to run on LPG, and although the savings are not as much as converting a petrol vehicle, they are still significant. Converting a diesel engine will see savings of approximately 20-30% for cars and light commercial vehicles.
You will spend a little more to buy a new LPG car (or to get LPG conversion for your existing vehicle), but once you start using your LPG vehicle, the savings soon start racking up.
On average, the savings from running a car on LPG mean that the price of conversion can be paid off within a year.
