What are exhibition stands

Article written by Trent Darby, 11th Jan 2009

Exhibition stands are lightweight, compact frames that from the backbone of trade shows and event marketing. Typically constructed from aluminium or plywood, they vary in size from very small to anything up to several metres in height and width. Magnetic bars or hooks usually form an integral part of the framework, and onto these it is normal to hang panels featuring either a fabric finish or attractive and eye-catching graphic design. Traditionally, exhibition stands were expensive to make. Their size meant that storage and transportation was always an issue, and their one-piece construction offered little or nothing in terms of flexibility. These days however, many companies opt for modular stands which are cheaper and much easier to construct and dismantle. Modularity also means that stands can be adapted to suit a range of different trade show environments.

Exhibition stands can be bought, hired or custom-built in a number of styles. The largest of these is what most people would consider to be a conventional trade show booth. Booths vary enormously in terms of size and complexity, and costs for the larger units can be high. If exhibition space in limited, or if companies wish to avoid the cost of a full-size display booth, portable stands represent a viable option. Many types of portable stand exist, with some of the most popular being banner stands and pop up displays. Banner stands are an excellent way to create small but professional-looking displays. Lightweight and portable, they are generally available in heights up to two metres or more, and widths of up to just over a metre. Pop up displays also offer great versatility. Larger than banner stands, their framework can expand to provide a wall of up 2.5 square metres. Graphic panels and other artwork can be attached to this wall to create visually appealing and high impact messaging.

Numerous companies specialise in the design, construction and sale of exhibition stands. A quick search on Google will return dozens of so-called experts, most of whom will be only to glad of the extra business. However, before investing in any type of trade show display stand, it is prudent to make a full survey of all that is available. Only then will you be in a position to judge what type of product is best suited to your needs. When it comes to the design and construction of custom-built booths, it is essential to make sure that the company has the experience and design ability to properly fulfill your needs. A reputable company will always maintain a professional online presence, and via this it should usually be possible to view a portfolio of work undertaken for a variety of clients. Finally, always remember this. Trade show marketing has the potential to generate a return on investment greater than almost any other marketing strategy. But while an appropriate, well designed stand or booth will go a long way in helping you to achieve this, an inappropriate or poorly designed unit may ultimately see all your hopes come to nothing.
